A Piece of Nancy Lives in Every Glowbox

My mom raised my sister and me on her own through the 80s and 90s. Money was tight, but she always found a way to make things feel magical. Video rental stores on Friday nights, walking the aisles for what felt like hours just picking the right movie. Every time, she'd ask the store manager if there were any posters they were giving away. She didn't always get one. But every so often, she'd score — and she'd bring it home like she'd won something.

By the time I was a kid, my bedroom walls were caked in poster art. Swamp Thing. Batman. Superman. Masters of the Universe. Evil Dead. Fright Night. So many more. Every wall told a story of a movie night, a video store trip, my mom asking one more time on our way out the door.

In 1990, she took me to see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at Metro North Mall. Before we even got to our seats, I stopped dead in the lobby — there was this big, glowing light box, backlit with those old fluorescent tubes, and the TMNT poster inside it looked alive. Like it was glowing just for me. I remember thinking: I need something like that in my room. I was a kid. There was no way to get one. But it stuck with me. For years.

In 2013, I finally figured out how to build it myself — a real LED version of that lobby magic, small enough for a bedroom wall, simple enough for anyone to switch out their poster in seconds. I showed my mom the very first prototype. She loved it.

In 2015, we lost her suddenly, in a motorcycle accident. Life hasn't been the same since. But Glowbox is still here, because she's the reason it exists at all — every poster she scored for me, every trip to the video store, every bit of magic she made out of not much at all. That's what's inside every Glowbox we send out.

With each one, a piece of my mom goes with it.
